The Rocky Boy’s Reservation is located on 124,000 acres of prime hunting land in north central Montana, 100 highway miles south of the US – Canadian border in Hill and Choteau counties.  The town of Box Elder, Montana is on the northwestern border of the reservation and Havre, Montana is located approximately 25 miles north of the

Rocky Boy’s Reservation. “Mount Baldy” is the highest peak on the reservation with an elevation of 6,900 feet.

The Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation Fish & Game program was established in the late 1980’s.  At that time there was very little big game to be found due to the fact there was year-round hunting. The Chippewa Cree Tribe Natural Resources Dept. CCT NRD, created a Fish & Game Code to address this situation. A hunting season was established and the Code was strongly enforced. The wild game population increased significantly. In 1996, the code was rewritten which addressed not only the big game but upland game birds, fur bearing animals, fishing, guide regulations, timber harvesting, and recreational activities. The Code includes very heavy penalties and sanctions for those that choose not to abide. 

With the abundance of big game found on the Rocky Boy’s Indian reservation, the Chippewa Cree Tribal Business Committee allowed the Chippewa Cree Tribe's Fish & Game program to sell permits to non-enrolled and non-Indian hunters. The ungulate herds that utilize Reservation lands are both resident and migratory in nature. Rocky Boy’s diverse topography and vegetative cover provide excellent wildlife habitat. Riparian areas are surrounded by aspen groves and coulees, extending to long benches with hawthorn or woodland covered ridges.  An abundance of natural springs, small ponds and reservoirs are found throughout the region and provide an excellent year round water source to wildlife.  (pictures)

There is a rifle and bow season for all big game hunting. Big game hunting permits include elk (cow and bull), deer (both white tail and mule deer), pronghorn antelope, and big horn sheep.  Predators on the reservation include mountain lion, coyote, bobcat, red fox, and several raptors. Richardson ground squirrel, voles, gophers, mice, cottontail, and jackrabbits make up an excellent prey base for raptors. Other small mammals found occupying Reservation lands include beaver, muskrat, mink, otter, skunk, porcupine, weasel, marmot, and raccoon. Upland game permits include pheasants, Hungarian "huns", sharp tail, and waterfowl.  there are also a significant amount of turkey found on the reservation and permits include a spring and fall season.  Recreatinal activities are plentifully widespread on the reservation and permits are available.  The Chippwea Cree Tribe;s Fish & Game administers all recreational activities on the reservation.
